The latest moss drawing is finished and framed.
No china pieces with this one, simply a larger circle of moss, rather like a planet I thought.
The seedlings, which I think are nettle emerged during the drawing process. Interesting to see these miniature ‘trees’ appear in the landscape.
Half way through the drawing I placed it outside so that it could have a breather and take advantage of the rain.
Overnight a bird decided to forage for building materials and had a rummage around in one area (lower left) which I tried to pat back in place. I’m almost certain it was the blackbird which at that time was building in the holly a few yards away.
This patch remained more chaotic than the rest and I wish I had actually drawn it as it was, strewn around and kicked about, rather than trying to put it back in its place.
Because that is the story.
The bird needed it and spotted a handy supply. 🐦⬛

“Midsummer Oak”
Polychromos coloured pencils on Fabriano 300gsm paper.
A portrait of the oak tree that stands beside the gate to the garden.
The foliage is a fresh olive green in spring and a patch of warm golds and browns in autumn. It feeds the squirrels, the jays, nuthatches and numerous others.
I’m interested in the scale of it, the grandeur over the gate and the bird table.
My work documents the everyday, the detail and the spaces in between: the negative spaces where the sky can be seen through the branches, the light and the dark.
With this drawing I found myself drawing the sky around and within the silhouette as I edged my way into the tree.
In a previous ‘process’ post @mennaangharad commented that by my drawing the sky and patches of light through the tree rather than the actual shape I was ‘feeling’ the shapes so that the tree was revealing itself, which is absolutely right Menna.

Bluebell season.
Just the one, in a small bottle found in the garden and with a piece of china (also unearthed) which also has bluebells.

And museum volunteers.
The theme is ‘Heritage’ and it’s fascinating to see so many different responses to this.
It was lovely to meet up with Kate Marchuk, and compare LAOTY experiences.
Here are some of the pieces that are on display, with apologies for some of the cropping that happened along the way to fit this square.

Ronni, who’s often to be found wandering over my table while I draw found herself a good spot for a siesta.
I made this drawing a couple of years ago having sketched Ron but worked from a photograph of the fabric. I liked how the ‘subject’ of the drawing was actually the area I worked least on, leaving her black cat silhouette almost untouched except for a little highlight here and there. Huge temptation to do more drawing on Ronni because I do like to get involved in detail, but I resisted.

The first Nantwich Open Art Exhibition is now open.
With the theme of ‘Heritage’ the exhibition includes 70 pieces of work by 50 artists and makers.
ThankYou so much to the selectors. I’m excited to be part of this and am looking forward seeing the exhibition at the launch evening on Friday.
‘Bluebells and a Pheasant Moon’ features a plate I love which seemed the perfect partner for the bluebells.
Whenever I paint bluebells I’m impressed by how many colours can be seen in those flowers, just beautiful.

I still find fragments of blue and white pottery in the garden, not many these days though.
Have they all been found?
Do we need to dig up the lawn?
There’s something about finding these tiny bits of history that makes me keep looking for the next one. It’s hard to stop.
